Abstract
Rolande Falcinelli (1920-2006) enjoyed a
remarkable and multi-faceted career as
pedagogue, church organist, recitalist, improviser, and composer.
She was
professeur d’orgue
at
the
Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris
from 1954-1986, held the post of
organiste-titulaire
at
Basilique de
Sacré-Coeur
from 1946-1973, maintained a rigorous
performing calendar throughout her career, and left more than 85 works for nearly all media,
earning such prizes as the
Grand Prix de Rome, the
Prix Halphen, and the
Prix Rossini.
Of these
works,
26
are scored for solo organ, and an additional
15
are chamber or orchestral works
utilizing
organ.
Despite Falcinelli’s considerable output, her organ works have yet to enter the
so-called ‘canon’ of the organ repertoire and remain largely unknown and
rarely performed or
recorded.
This study surveys Falcinelli’s
published
works for solo organ and places them within
five broad topical categories: pedagogical, ecclesiastical, Biblical, Persian, and relational.
