Abstract
This
thesis
explores
Camille
Saint-Saëns’
three
books
of piano
études,
Op.
52,
Op.
111,
and
Op.
135,
analyzing
these
études
and
exploring
their
implications
for
pedagogy
and
performance.
Also
examined
is the
influence
on Saint-
Saëns’
musical
language
from
other
notable
pianist-composers,
especially
Liszt
and
Chopin,
identifying
important
similarities
which
link
the
etudes
of these
three
composers
musically
and
pedagogically.
Chapter
1 begins
with
a short
biography
and
overview
of Saint-
Saëns’
musical
style,
and
then
discusses
the
composer’s
preference
for
Baroque
forms,
and
his
relationship
with
other
Romantic
composers
who
most
influenced
his
own
musical
style.
Chapters
2 and
3 provide
the
historical
backgrounds
for
the
Six
Études,
Op.
52
and
Six
Études,
Op.
111
respectively,
then
analyze
the
formal
structure
of these
études,
giving
attention
to pedagogical
issues
vis-à-vis
virtuoso
performance;
and
discuss
relationships
with
appropriate
etudes
of Liszt
and
Chopin.
Chapter
4 considers
the
background
of Saint-
Saëns’
Six
Études
pour
la main
gauche
seule, Op.
135
and
briefly
discusses
the
development
of these
studies
for
the
left–hand
alone;
analyzing
their
formal
structure
and
pedagogical
issues.
The
three
books
of
études
are
also
examined
in the
light
of Saint-
Saëns'
evolution
and
maturation
as a composer,
and
his
dedication
to the
spirit
of French
music.
