Abstract
Playing lead trumpet in a big band setting is a position that demands much from a
musician. The skills necessary not only include
a great rhythmic concept
for the music
and the
ability to play consistently in the upper register, but also the
capacity
to interpret the various
aspects of dynamics and articulations with
regularity
for the band to follow. To become a
proficient lead trumpeter, one must dedicate time to a daily practice routine that promotes growth
and maintenance of the trumpet fundamentals while also studying and listening to the music of
the idiom. This study
explores
the
daily routines of
lead
and high-note
trumpet players
to assess
the techniques, methods, and method books most commonly used. Using a questionnaire to
gather the information, the participants of this study have submitted their experience regarding
their personal practice routines during both developmental and professional stages. Because very
little has been written about practice routines for this specialized position, the compilation of
these routines is a valuable resource for students developing a personal schedule. With the
specific skills needed to perform as a lead or high-note trumpeter, a musician desiring to work at
the professional level must maintain these skills with the necessary trumpet techniques that are
shown throughout this study.
