Abstract
This thesis explores the solo cello music of Swedish-born Finnish composer Einar
Englund (1916-1999), specifically his
Suite for Cello (The Last Island).
Starting with a general
survey of the
Finnish solo cello
repertoire, the author not only presents a descriptive biography
of Englund’s life but also a stylistic analysis of his
Suite for Cello (The Last Island).
In addition,
an analysis of performance practice issues is included in the discussion incorporating the
author’s interpretations and suggestions. The work is a demanding composition both musically
and technically and this thesis serves as a useful resource illustrating Englund’s composing
career with an emphasis on his
Suite for Cello (The Last Island).
