- An unexpected result appears when looking at my micro made structure. Through the eyes of an electron microscope, a gray-scale image zooms in far beyond what our eyes can see. A thin, holey layer of glass seems to float above the surface. This glass, or silicon dioxide, is used for an intermediate step when fabricating tiny lasers. It is needed to assign the holes in the surface below. The glass is only 400 nanometers, or around 0.5% the width of a human hair. When put under too great a strain, the layer detached. It parallels what can happen to us when stretched too thin or stressed too much. We must make a change in order to deal with the pressure.
