- Abstract
- Within my work I am interested in cultural subversions of the artificial and natural, as well as how transhuman technology redefines and enhances human nature and biological identity. As a maker and artist I create using the modified human body the site and inspiration for the work I create. My own material and process decisions reflect these ideas; I use plastic for its tactile, utilitarian, materialistic, and problematic immortal qualities, for, unlike our own bodies, it is what remains after we are gone; the evidence of our existence, and the last thing left. As part of my research and work I have been exploring the properties of directly recycled plastic, and through the generosity of the School of Art and Design, I have been able to obtain the tools needed for this research. By shredding common plastic shopping bags and running them through a filament extruder, I have been able to manipulate a materialistic, cultural byproduct into a new form that can then be 3D printed. Currently, it is my hope that this exploration may be integrated into my larger work, reflecting an aspect of renewal, reuse, and a new human nature.
