- Abstract
- The right research inspires uncultivated minds, and uncultivated minds are full of potential. As a graduate student at UIUC, my greatest pride does not always stem from my core research. It’s the intellectual tools that my work can provide me which then can be taught and shown to others. My need to serve my department, to teach what I know, and to spread interest in my field yielded a small side project for the Nuclear Engineering Department. For the last two years, I’ve attempted to provide visiting high school students and undergraduates a fun and research relevant project that they can interact with during engineering open house. While nothing more than a remote-control car with radiation sensing electronics, the Geiger Car, pictured here in an early second iteration, continues to be revised with hopes to keep students interested in what our field can provide. I intend to keep this open house project funded independently and presented every year I’m here. It continues to hold relevance as remote radiation sensing drones are being developed by experts in the field to assure national nuclear security, and as a tool for remote assessment of contaminated regions which pose high radiological health hazards.
