- Abstract
- As Jules Verne’s “A Journey to the Center of the Earth” tells about the adventures of three intrepid travelers into the bowels of the Earth, my “PhD adventure” is into a nuclear medicine imaging system, an adventure made of circuits, detectors, wiring and collimators. My research consists on developing an experimental Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT) scanner: a special camera that after injection of a radioactive substance in the animal body takes a 3D picture of its distribution. This allows to analyze and monitor non-invasively the function and activity of internal organs. The system, only one in the world, is sized for small laboratory animals and the hand gives an idea of the real object dimensions (around 10 inches in diameter). The picture shows the “bowels” of the system when it is disassembled for testing on a lab bench and gives you the opportunity to take a look of its internal complexity. What is shown is the result of a long and accurate optimization process in which every detail is carefully engineered and every component is perfectly designed to fit in the overall compact architecture.
