Abstract
Ions close to speed of light (≥ 10% of c) are commonly observed in outer space and they have been imposing challenges on space adventure since they are harmful for human beings and modern semiconductor devices. Due to expensive costs and limited access to high-speed ion sources, computer simulation has been indispensable for fundamental
understanding of ion-radiation-matter interaction. Recent advance in computing capabilities even allows us to simulate the dynamics of electrons! Now, let’s imaging we are the ions traveling near the speed of light and we just crashed into a material, in this case a magnesium oxide crystal with a missing oxygen atom. These two figures illustrate what we
will see penetrating the material (left) and a close side-view of what is happening (right)! Coloring indicates different levels of electron density.
