- Ever wondered what the surface of a polymer structure may look like up close? Well this is a modified Selective Electron Microscope (SEM) image of the surface of a directly solidified and crystallized polymer-organic eutectic system. This eutectic is a mixture of polyethylene and camphor where the two solid phases intimately coexist, however, the distribution of these two solid phases varies among the structure. My goal is to develop the ideal process in making the perfect eutectic system that produces a porous, lamellar like structure in a single direction like the zoomed in image in the top corner. The general focus is on the formation of micro and nano structures that exhibit important optical, electrical, and mechanical properties such as a conducting polymer. Alloying a polymer and an organic compound may represent a novel route to polymer-based composites. However, the predictability of the structure of eutectic growth produced by a pair of polymer/organic solid solutions is still an unsolved problem.
