- Abstract
- This picture depicts how I travel. Painkiller to reduce muscle soreness from cramped seats, tablet to kill time in an overcrowded airport during flight delays, and a pillow to ensure I don’t doze off on my fellow passenger. But despite the ordeal I go through, I still fly. And there are many others like me. Forecasts show that demand for air travel will double over the next two decades. And the bigger question remains-is our infrastructure ready to handle such a rapid airline traffic growth? The answer is we are getting there! And my research with Federal Aviation Association (FAA) helps the aviation community achieve just that. At FAA’s National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) realistic full-size aircraft wheels were applied on instrumented pavement sections to study how aircraft can damage the runways and I analyze these data to predict the deformation trends in America’s airfield pavements. These predictions will help the engineers build stronger, longer lasting, and more resilient airport runways and taxiways. Yes, I might still travel with a pillow, but I will be flying happily, knowing our airplane is taking off from and landing on stronger, smoother, and safer foundations than ever before.
