- Abstract
- My research focuses on testimonies and letter grievances of detained immigrants located on the U.S./Mexican border of El Paso, TX and Cd. Juarez. In the summer of 2016, I volunteered to visit them at the El Paso Detention Center and since then have been in contact with the Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee, a group that increases visibility to the harsh conditions and treatment migrants receive at the center. I am interested in bridging the gap of their intangible but credible stories to make pieces that directly connect their experience, voice, and fears into artwork. With “Shackled Freedom”, I focus on a common thread the grievances share, which is being treated like an animal, specifically a dog. With this in mind, the piece contains ten quotes laser-etched on clear acrylic hung by chains that connect to a dog-training collar. The clear acrylic symbolizes the lack of transparency at the detention center and the location of the image was taken at the international bridge of El Paso/Cd. Juarez. Hung directly on the fence in between the two countries with the visible division in the background is representative of a border that was systematically and politically made.
