- Visualization of the stress-strain field of materials in real experiments has always been a challenging yet fascinating topic in material science. It can provide crucial information about load distribution and local stress concertation which may give insights into a material’s failure mechanisms. In my lab, my research is focused on the fracture mechanisms of soft materials. The intrinsic fracture toughness of the materials is evaluated via cutting. The image was captured with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera from the surface of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in a single cutting test, when the material was rupturing from middle-top of the field of view under the compression of a razor blade. To visualize the stress-strain field in this failure process, the digital image correlation technique was utilized. The algorithm is able to track the displacements of the speckle pattern applied on the surface of the material, which is then converted into the strain and the stress. By overlapping the strain components in both the horizontal and shearing directions, with different colors indicating different stress-strain magnitude toned appropriately, a butterfly-shaped field near the crack tip is revealed. This serves as a mechanical map both informative and visually appealing.
