Abstract

3D printing has been celebrated as an entirely digital means of producing physical form. Though physical objects are easily imaged, stored, and shared in digital media, these digital representations cannot be printed losslessly into non-digital media; the layer-by-layer 3D printing process imposes a discretized form, regardless of the designer’s intent. My research incorporates elements of structural engineering and computer science to write complex 3D objects in a vectorized, freeform fashion, using a stiff ink made of sugar. The design is traced, rather than sampled, so the process is additive but not digital. This allows us to overcome some of the limitations of digital fabrication and create expansive forms without pixelation. This image was generated from one photograph of four physical copies of a heart tissue engineering scaffold and a ballpoint pen. The black-and-white portion represents the design intent, and the color captured in the original photograph represents the additional dimensionality enabled by the freeform writing approach.
