Abstract

I visited the Oriental Institute in Chicago multiple times for my research, and captured this photo of visitors stared at a large-scale Tutankhamen status. The purpose of my study is to investigate how one museum in the Midwestern United States, the Oriental Institute, contextualizes a specific collection of cultural artifacts' object itineraries in its permanent collections for the public. I then suggest strategies for art educators to provide such information as part of the provenance for artifacts in different settings, such as art museums, public schools, and workshops. To guide my research, I explore the questions including: What are the complex cultural histories behind this artifact? How do curators and art educators in the Oriental Institute describe the purpose and difficulties of providing the object itineraries information in their exhibition? What are some strategies for art educators to navigate the educational and informational gap caused by the chronic absence of provenance? Such questions are increasingly important in a world where cultural appropriation is still a norm; meanwhile, misunderstandings and assumptions of how museums received their collection, especially non-western artifacts, are common.
