- Abstract
- We naturally impart a kind of fanciful separation between the world of our everyday lives and the microscopic realm, a place that can appear alien to us. Even so we strive to control and impart an order upon the smallest of things, a hallmark of my field of materials science. Here I show something different, a monolith emerging from a disordered and seemingly chaotic field of this alien world. This landscape is the top of a surface which has sprayed with an omniphobic coating consisting of polymers and tiny pieces of silica. This coating can be applied to most everyday objects with our own hands, through spraying or dipping, yet the key imparted roughness is on the order of microns. This microscopic chaos is what actually prevents liquids from wetting the surface, keeping it dry in the wettest environments. My research involves developing these coatings to prevent wetting of synthetic vascular systems, electronics, self-healing materials, and biological systems. I strive to take advantage of chaos and disorder at the microscale to achieve greater control of the world which we see and interact with every day.
