- Abstract
- We proposed a novel manufacturing process of metal nanowires from bulk material: the Laser-assisted Draw Casting (LDC). LDC can find many applications in stretchable or transparent conductors, spanning the meter scale, where traditional photolithography and lift-off routes are unnecessarily expensive and slow. LDC uses laser to heat a preform containing a bulk metal wire (Palladium, Gold, Nickel, etc.) in a silica capillary to temperatures exceeding 1700 #C, followed by rapid drawing to reduce their diameters in one step to the sub-micron scale with several centimeters length thus leading to aspect ratio beyond 10E5. The resulting wires have single crystalline structure across their diameter and long crystal length in a bamboo arrangement, which makes them highly electrically conductive and mechanically ductile.
