- Abstract
- If you are using a website and the design doesn’t allow you to do what you want, you leave the page to find another. The same issue occurs in educational technology, but students often don’t have the choice to use another source of content. If forced to use an app that doesn’t work intuitively, students lose interest, resulting in reduced engagement and learning. The design of educational tools significantly impacts how students interact with content. My research is focused on the visual design of educational technologies and how the design of information affects what students understand. Food for Thought is a multi-touch application designed to use food as an entry point for students to learn about climate change. Choosing from 22 different foods contained in the app, students were prompted to create meals based on challenges provided by the teacher. This photograph captures a moment of collaboration when a group responded to a prompt to build the most environmentally-friendly meal. This software was designed to create intuitive and meaningful interactions for students, allowing them to generate interest and meaningful learning around climate change.
