- Abstract
- This picture was taken in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in China when I was a freshman studying urban and rural planning. Traveling to Shaoxing during that winter vacation, I was fully obsessed by this ancient river town with thousands years’ history. I wandered through the alleys, lingered by the riversides and hovered over the stone bridges. The small town in the winter is like a traditional Chinese ink painting. However as a student of urban and rural planning, I knew how severe situation these small towns faced. With the fast speed of urbanization these years, tens of thousands of young people abandoned their homes in villages and small towns to chase for their dreams in mega cities. These once thrived towns which nurtured generations and generations were abandoned like an old mother. From that day on, I realized, as an urban planning student, if I didn’t save these river towns, they will finally disappears from the map of China. Inspired by this scenery, I chose the sustainable small town plan as my capstone for undergraduate. By using the planning theories and design methods I learned for four years, I made the regulatory plan for a small river town.
