Abstract
While Sir Malcolm Arnold is widely celebrated
as a film score and symphonic composer,
his wide range of instrumental solo works are relatively unknown to many. In fact, Arnold’s clarinet works were created in close affiliation with two of the most well-known clarinetists,
Frederick Thurston and Benny Goodman. In order to explore Arnold’s contribution to the
clarinet repertoire, this thesis will examine all
of the composer’s clarinet works:
Clarinet
Concerto No. 1
(1948),
Clarinet Sonatina
(1951),
Fantasy for Clarinet
(1965) and
Clarinet
Concerto No.
2
(1974). Also, in the hope of promoting awareness
and performance
of these
works,
this document will provide background information, theoretical and performance
suggestions.
One of the unique features about this project is that these four works disperse
from the early years to the mature period of Arnold’s career.
Through comparisons, we would
also be able to identify some unifying
stylistic traits of the composer throughout these works
at the end of this project.
