Abstract
Eugen Cicero (1940-1997), a classically trained pianist, later became an active jazz performer who toured in a number of countries. Many of his jazz arrangements of classical pieces were never published and have not received much attention in scholarly writings to date. This scholarly essay provides my analysis and transcriptions for three selected pieces from Cicero’s arrangements
—
Ah! Vous
Dirais
-Je, Maman
,
Cicero Walzer Nr.2
and
Prelude In C Minor, Op. 28 No. 20
.
Analysis will include a comparison of each original classical piece to the transcribed
jazz arrangements, as well as a comparison between the pieces that he arranged.
This project will provide useful material
—for instance my transcriptions of the
scores
—for others who share similar interests in Cicero’s arrangements and in
improvising on classical pieces. Furthermore, I hope this project will demonstrate in
a concrete way how classical music can be transformed into jazz through different
arranging strategies.
