Abstract
In 1974, Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson published their now famous paper The UNIX1 Time-Sharing System in Communications of the ACr..L In 1978, approximately 1000 computers ran the UNIX system world wide. By 1982 this number had increased to 5000. Today, there are more than 100,000 UNIX systems in operation [Ma, 84J. There are currently more than 70 computer lines which run UNIX and approximately 100 companies developing UNIX applications. UNIX is used at some 1400 colleges and universities around the world. The rapid and continuing spread of the UNIX system into both academic and industrial areas is undeniable.
