Abstract
The goal of this essay is to capture snap-shots of the African-American experience in five rural mining communities in five different time periods. The communities are all in Illinois, and include Jo Daviess, Gallatin, Perry, Christian and Will Counties. This essay argues that the position of the black mine laborer, and his family, needs to be placed in relation to a number of frameworks, including labor history, the history of technology, social history and the history of racism in Illinois and in the country in order to reduce the bias that would accrue from considering just one of these lenses in isolation.
