Abstract
This paper, a chapter in the 2015 book Transforming Institutions: Undergraduate STEM Education for the 21st Century, was the outgrowth of the 2014 international conference on this same theme sponsored by the Discovery Learning Research Center at Purdue University. The goal of the conference was to compare approaches to STEM education that would improve understanding, encourage diversity, heighten graduation rates, and enhance students’ long-term professional success. The paper, “Transformative Initiatives: How iFoundry Reimagines STEM Education for the 21st Century”, provides a case study of the College of Engineering’s effort at the University of Illinois to foster undergraduate innovation by means of iFoundry, a curriculum incubator and enrichment program.
