Abstract
Juan Ramón Jiménez's extensive reading in British, Anglo-Irish, and North American poetry has received careful attention, but his interest in the major poets of Illinois has so far merited only passing comments. This paper intends to remedy that situation, first, by presenting a brief chronology of Jiménez's interest in Vachel Lindsay
(1879-1931), Edgar Lee Masters (1865-1950), and Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), and second, by pointing to analogies and parallels
that help account for the Spanish poet's interest in poets whose sensibility and imagination differ markedly from his own.
