Abstract
This study intends to examine Alfredo Casella’s musical style and social environment along with his personal style within the context of neo-classicism. Casella’s oeuvre can be divided into three periods. In the first period, Casella was influenced by many of the composers he encountered during his stay in Paris, including Debussy, Strauss, and Mahler. In this period, he wrote various works which explored the styles of different composers, from Brahms to Debussy and Wagner. In his second period, Casella explored highly dissonant styles, inspired by Schönberg. The third, late period represents a possible synthesis of these earlier experiments, in that neo-classical elements predominate; however, Casella, after having explored the styles of many other composers, at this time discovers his own compositional voice. This paper will define and explain the primary aspects of Casella’s unique compositional style.
