Abstract
This paper discusses method to calculate the electron drift velocity in the F;region of the ionosphere. Data from the ALTAIR radar was provided in voltage phasor form in profile and range dimensions, and was used after resizing. The drift velocity is obtained by first computing the power spectra for each profile along the range. The power spectra are de;noised by subtracting powers at high altitudes and the atmosphere is divided into three parts by height and measured electron density. We assumed that electrons in the same group are moving at same velocity with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field, so a direction matrix is constructed to represent the direction of every radar sample in a coordinate system generated from the direction of Earth’s magnetic field. Finally, the electron drift velocity could be calculated using least square method for solving an over;determined system. All calculations are done in Python.
