Abstract
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is an emerging low power wireless technology developed for short range control and monitoring applications. The availability of the low power, simple communication model of BLE has resulted in the explosion of Internet of Things (IoT) enabled devices. A system based on BLE will let you unlock your doors, set the temperature or control your lights with minimal power. In retail it has the potential to improve customer experience with functions such as in-store navigation and user -specific recommendations.
On the retail business side, BLE presents the opportunity to automate inventory control. Such a solution would require smart devices with precise context awareness to stock the products around. Here we present a detailed study of BLE channel characteristics using a series of tests with real devices. This is followed by the design and implementation of Smart LaBLEs, our BLE based automated inventory control system. Smart LaBLEs are BLE listeners that detect BLE equipped products around them and configure their displays to show the nearest product, thus acting as decentralized IoT hubs. Comprehensive evaluation of Smart LaBLEs shows promising results while leaving room for improving efficiency and responsiveness.
