Abstract
This document looks at selected percussion works of Spanish composer and violinist Igmar Alderete. The focus of this document is to examine five separate works and to provide suggestions that will guide a performer during their study of these pieces. The works chosen for study include
Concerto No. 1 for Marimba and Orchestra (2004), Duo: Three Dances for Marimba and String Bass (2006), Concerto No. 2 for Marimba and Orchestra (2009), Dances of the Mallets (2011),
and Echoes of the Earth (2015). This document is directed at the advanced marimbist with the desire to help guide future performances of these works. Chapter one provides background information on the study and provides technical information about specific terminology used throughout the document. Chapter two provides a thorough up-to-date biography of the composer, Igmar Alderete. Chapters three through seven provide a detailed discussion of each composition with suggestions to guide future performances. In the conclusion, the author looks at the works studied in this project from a pedagogical viewpoint and offers suggestions for the order in which
a student might study them.
