- Abstract
- Often writers come into the Writers Workshop expecting their paper to be ready to submit in their 50-minute appointment. Yet, many times it is what happens at home after the appointment that has a true impact on creating a better writer. This is especially true for personal statements, where a student must transfer knowledge learned from academic writing to this important genre that determines acceptance into graduate school. The purpose of my research is to find how writers use their experience from the Writers Workshop to revise their personal statements. This research will strive to see how students take concepts from the workshop and apply them to make themselves a better writer. By collecting qualitative data through interviews, effective methods for tutoring those with personal statements should be discovered. Ultimately, findings from this study will lead to improving tutors abilities to help students who bring in personal statements.
