Abstract
The American composer John Anthony Lennon (b. 1950) established his reputation in the saxophone community through his early works including Distances Within Me (1979) and the
Symphonic Rhapsody (1984). He is an active and productive composer and still writing music for saxophone. This thesis provides an analysis along with a performance guide for three
selected works: Distances Within Me for alto saxophone and piano (1979); aeterna for solo alto saxophone (1996); and Elysian Bridges for saxophone quartet (2011).
The analyses focus on 1) the interval-classes and the principal sets used in each piece, and 2) a study of the motivic figures by which the formal structure of each work is defined. The
musical character and emotional content (where feelings and emotion direct elements such as tempo and rhythm) is given consideration, and the performance guides are based on integrating
the emotional content with the technical indications.
