Abstract
In the last thirty years, Portuguese composers have written many significant works for horn. This thesis explores this contemporary horn repertoire in the context of Portuguese music history and illuminates the roles performers have played in cultivating these works. At the heart of the study is a series of detailed analyses of fourteen scores. These annotations are a useful resource for horn players interested in exploring diverse compositional and pedagogical methods. Biographical information for each of the composers is included, together with English translations of relevant Portuguese texts and poems, and a comprehensive list of contemporary works with horn by Portuguese composers. With Portugal’s admission to the European Union, and the fall of the Estado Novo Régime in 1974, composers enjoyed greater ease of travel and more opportunities to study in Europe and the United States, while benefitting from increased financial investment in the arts. Portuguese composers responded by creating diverse contemporary works that represented their rich cultural history and experiences. Some composers drew inspiration from music of their home country while international influences also made their mark. Portuguese horn performers such as Abel Pereira, J. Bernardo Silva, and Ricardo Matosinhos gained international acclaim in these years, and specifically sought out Portuguese composers to write new works for horn. This fresh body of compositions not only showcased the commissioning performers, but also provided native repertoire for a younger generation of horn players.
