How do students perceive Muslims praying publicly on a university campus? The University of Illinois is home to the very first Muslim student alliance and now this student organization is not only in most colleges but also in most high schools. The University of Illinois has a very large student population of over forty thousand students, but how do students perceive Muslims praying publicly on campus? This is not just a question for non-Muslims but for Muslims also. Do Muslims themselves feel awkward praying openly? Are people disturbed or curious about the unique way that Muslims pray? Is it ok for a group to congregate and pray out loud or is is it only ok to be done silently and individually? Prayer is a huge part of the Islamic faith and this research will give a perspective of how people feel and perceive Muslims praying publicly on campus.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
