This project focuses on the meaning of wearing a hijab for women at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign campus. In the beginning of the school year, there was a “Wear a Hijab Challenge” held at the Main Quad where Muslim women gave other women an opportunity to wear a hijab for a day to experience what it’s like for Muslim women to wear one. Learning about it made me wonder what it is like for Muslim women to wear a hijab on campus. It made me curious to see if Muslim women who wear one have ever experienced stereotyping or differential treatment. This research project was led to question, how are Muslim women who wear hijabs treated here on campus and if Muslim women who don’t wear one are treated differently? The object of this research is to see if women on campus who wear hijabs have felt prejudice and microaggressions against them because of their choice to wear one. I conducted multiple interviews with students in person between the ages of 18-24 who are willing to share their stories and thoughts on what it’s like wearing one on campus. In order to find people, I will utilized my connections from various organizations, such as Muslim Student Association, contacting Muslim women who have prominent leadership in the campus community, and utilized the Asian American Cultural Center to aid me in finding someone who is willing to share their story via email. After collecting the information, I show what kind of treatment Muslim women face on campus and if they experienced privilege or oppression because they choose to wear a hijab. This research provides valuable meaning in learning the significance of wearing a hijab as a college student at UIUC.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
