- Abstract
- Three-dimensional (3D) microstructures are ubiquitous in biological systems, providing basic functions such as fluid transport (vascular networks), electrical communication (neural circuits), mechanical actuation (cytoskeletons) and others. Compelling opportunities also exist in analogous 3D architectures of human-made devices. Recently, we developed an assembly approach of constructing 3D microstructures with complex, targeted geometries on elastomer substrates using advanced electronic materials such as single-crystalline silicon. The picture shows two false-colored scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of a 3D microstructure that I recently made using single-crystalline silicon. The left image was taken from the top-view angle and the right one was taken from the side view angle. The scale bar is 200 'm. This 3D microstructure has three layers independently standing together, just like the flyovers could work separately without affecting each other. The structure can be used as on-chip attena for wireless communications and smart scaffolds for monitoring and stimulating the growth of live cells and tissues.
