- Abstract
- This analysis illustrates the communicative evolution of mental health over the past 19 years. Each sphere represents one diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). In the field of behavioral health, the DSM is the primary information source used when determining diagnoses and treatment recommendations throughout the Western Hemisphere. Nodes in this graph are connected to highlight relationships such as similarity, power, and mechanisms of change among the definitions of disorders. Each layer of this image shows how our definition of mental health has evolved from 1994 to 2013. This project highlights how communicative behaviors, the organizations we are a part of, and the ways we choose to grow are interconnected and structure our realty.
