Abstract

Millions of people are under threat on a daily basis. This threat impacts all ages, genders, nationalities, and socioeconomic classes. The threat is noise exposure. Over 10 million individuals in the United States suffer from noise induced hearing loss, and that number grows every year. Noise is everywhere including concerts, sporting events, industrial workplaces, and gun ranges. Hearing protection is very effective, but only if it is inserted properly. Each package of hearing protection provides a noise reduction rating (NRR) but this number does not account for the variations of insertion depth. Spending 4 years of my life serving as a Marine Corp Scout Sniper, I've personally experienced the devastation that noise exposure can cause while not wearing hearing protection properly. The purpose of my research was to identify a clinical protocol for evaluating the effectiveness of hearing protection on individual users. This information will give audiologists a way to provide customized protection data and improve training on the proper use of hearing protection. It may be too late to save my hearing, but it doesn't have to be too late to save others.
