Abstract

One fall evening, I and my colleagues were preparing bone specimens at the SUNLab. It was like any other day in lab; we cut, ground and polished the specimens so we could test them through nanoindentation. On this day, much to our surprise, we captured this beautiful image under an optical microscope at a 5X zoom. It was overwhelming to observe that our specimen preparation protocols worked out well. We could see the hierarchical structure of the cortical bone with osteons, Haversian canals, and other intricacies at this microscopic level. The purpose of our research is to understand the multiscale characterization of materials through sustainable methods. The SUNLab tests bone specimens to understand its mechanical properties; properties including the elastic modulus, hardness, and fracture strength. The quantitative data obtained from our research can be used to establish an accurate model depicting why bones break.
