Abstract

Women's and men's voices are differentially impacted by age; however, a dearth of research exists regarding sexual dimorphism of the aged larynx. This is primarily due to the general inaccessibility of laryngeal muscles in humans. The rat model is a valuable model used to evaluate neuromuscular changes of the laryngeal muscles associated with aging and disease. This coronal section of a whole rat larynx illustrates the different fiber types and sizes of rat laryngeal muscles using immunofluorescent imaging. My current research focuses on establishing the rat model to evaluate differences between male and female rat laryngeal muscles and specifically investigate the effects of menopause on laryngeal aging. Preliminary results from my research indicate adult male have larger laryngeal muscles with a similar muscle fiber composition in comparison to adult female rat laryngeal muscles. Future investigations will seek to discover how aging may differentially impact laryngeal mechanisms between sexes in this unique application of the rat model.
