- Abstract
- Motion-capture and analysis systems provide an opportunity to highlight and manipulate the expressive characteristics of movement, providing dancers with a new medium for aesthetic investigation. This medium gets at the core of my research, driving artistic performance forward through the fusion of information technology and aesthetic expression. Such movement systems have allowed me to approach choreography through visualization, deriving movement features from skeleton positions and using it to provide an information based perspective of a dancer's expressive intentions. This allows for the dancer to freely paint with their movement, using a palette of feature gradations. Each frame is a slice of time capturing the expressive minutiae at an instance within the choreography. By analyzing dance at a frame-by-frame visualization of movement features, dancers are able to approach complex information relationships to their movement intuitively, taking a new approach from within their established art form.
