Abstract

This image was taken on Christmas (Kiritimati) Island located in the central equatorial Pacific. My colleagues and I took the day off from fieldwork to visit a 4th grade classroom where we talked about El Nio. We talked about how it works and about the significant influence El Nio has over the water and food resources for the island. We also told them about our mission to find the history of tropical climate cycles in the sediment of a nearby lake, something they were unexpectedly fascinated by. Afterwards, the children were absolutely thrilled to play a game of shooting cowrie shells, and they beat us almost every time.
