- Abstract
- This image was taken at a sports camp for veterans with newly acquired disabilities. It highlights the power of sport to be leveraged as a social experience that aids in the transition back to civilian life. Through my research, I showed the potential of sports to aid in the transition of veterans with visible and invisible disabilities pursuing higher education. Sport is an avenue used when working with veterans due to the competitive and kinesthetic nature that is a major part of military culture. Sport programming should be designed as a vehicle for: reducing symptoms of PTSD, enhancing marital satisfaction, strengthening family ties, discovering personal abilities and strengths, generating positive emotions and mood states, reducing stress, and developing social networks. This image shows many of these outcomes that are inherent to sport, and further highlights the camaraderie and competitive space in which veterans choose to invest their energy. This picture shows the potential of sport to be a site for veterans with disabilities to befriend their veteran peers and the rest of the student body, mitigating stereotypes associated with being a veteran and someone with a disability, in the process.
