- Abstract
- Shortly before this self-portrait was taken, my doctor had pointed to a glowing white line on the x-ray of my right foot, and I watched as my chances of qualifying for the conference track and field meet slipped right through that crack in my fourth metatarsal bone. My experience was similar to the experiences of many other injured athletes at the elite level, where loss of identity, loss of self-confidence, and feelings of devastation, uncertainty, and anger are common. Luckily, teammates, coaches, and friends often step in to provide support for injured athletes. Some athletes, especially those competing at the higher level, also have access to medical professionals who are willing to work with them toward physical recovery and psychological wellness. Despite the abundance of social support available, however, many injured athletes, myself included, end up feeling ultimately alone. My research looks to understand the types of social support that are preferred by injured athletes, taking into account their individual differences, in an attempt to protect these athletes against negative emotional responses, and to bring about better practice when providing social support in the context of sports injury.
