Abstract

My research focuses on the cosmogony and mythology of Zapotecan motifs, specifically the fretwork designs of the archaeological site of Mitla, Oaxaca. In studying the designs through first the process of photo documentation and then in 3D modeling, I am interested in marrying different materials, such as resin, plastic and silver to represent the motifs. As a way to connect these objects to my metalsmithing skills I use the 3D printed designs to cast them in silver, thus interpreting the historical icons through the use of modern fabrication. Through the process of researching the symbolism behind these pre-Hispanic designs, I add the rich history of Oaxacan weavers of rugs and garments to further explore the possibilities of interweaving through technology and tradition.
