- Abstract
- As I dance artist I am endlessly inspired and challenged by the complexities that arise when utilizing bodies as a primary material for research. I consider the daily tasks and choreographies that all bodies endure to navigate complicated (and often violent) social systems and structures, and am interested in utilizing movement research as a means of developing new possibilities for embodiment, physicality, and interaction. My work has developed through ongoing interrogations of queerness within both human and nonhuman cultures, as well as interspecies interactions and histories. There are trillions of additional microscopic bodies that further constitute all bodies: protozoa, archaea, parasites, yeast, and much more. In my choreographic process I think about how this means we are never only one moving body, and I am deeply excited by the ways in which this lens challenges and disrupts not only expectations of dance but also normative definitions of gender, sexuality, and biological make-up. This image is a promotional photograph for an evening length duet, Queeranimal Imaginary, and I believe it exemplifies the performance methodology I employ to imagine new possibilities for embodiment that are not always only human.
