- Abstract
- As a MFA candidate in Theatre Design, I recently had the privilege to sound design Not About Nightingales by Tennessee Williams. I was confident in all the music specified by the playwright except for one lyrical piece of dialog spoken by the prisoners in the play simultaneously. We were challenged because we could not find any song or poem that matched the dialog. I searched through an exorbitant amount of sheet music to no prevail. The play was set and written in the 1930s. The prisoners only had knowledge of the music they heard before they were imprisoned, narrowing the search to music published between 1910 to 1930. Eventually I found the 1929 scandalous song: Turn On the Heat featured in the film Sunny Side Up. The lyrics didn't match up exactly, but the structure of the two matched. For the first time I felt like a Sherlock Holmes of sound design by using evidence to create a theory, which sparked passion for my current research dealing with dissecting Williams's plays to discover the importance of sound in theatre. This meaningful experience led me to create this multimedia painting: Uncovering Passion.
