Abstract

You are looking at the tiny mud crickets in their natural habitat; they are about 0.2 inches and live near rivers and ponds in the Neotropics. These insects have modified legs to jump in the water but we do not know much about their biology. This breeding pair is camouflaged so that they blend in with the muddy background. Other species of mud crickets are bigger (around 0.7 inches) and more colorful; they are usually black with red or yellow spots. All of their characteristics are important to trace their relationships and the evolution of traits. The aim of my research is to study the relationships between the species and their closest relatives, for this I am doing a phylogeny; I study their morphology, coloration and DNA. This is helping us to understand the diversity of the group, their distribution and conservation status.
