- Abstract
- "Why a messy desk? Mind and desk it is a metaphor that illustrates several mind fragments and a mosaic of non-linear routines that a researcher faces constantly. On top of a desk, we find piles of sketches, formulas, research papers, journals, books, sorts of data and other reminders of our deadlines and goals. Sometimes those are driven by conference ""call for papers"", the power of caffeine or at a higher level, based on ""publish or perish"" academic pressure. We face the constraints of research funding and grants and the massive amount of information out there. The world is for sure not our desk or research field, but sometimes that is the solitude and location we call home while pursuing our degrees. On the bright side, we often feel the pride of presenting our studies or getting awards along the way. We try to seek our passions and intrinsic motivations. Even on hard days, in which all seem to be limited to the sunshine imagination of our next conference venue or class break. At the end of the day, we know it is about education, learning, research and applied science, no matter how messy our desks and minds are."
