Abstract
In a world where the influence of visual culture is only increasing, it becomes critical to develop visual literacy skills early on in life. Art museums are well positioned to provide early visual literacy education and often offer programs for older children and adults. However, programs designed for pre-kindergarten children are largely lacking. This paper reviews several trends in current visual literacy programs, outlines several design principles for visual literacy applications for children, and provides a visual example of using artwork to introduce children to colors, shapes and other basic visual literacy elements.
