Abstract
The reaction between La atom and isoprene (chem{CH_2=CHC(CH_3)=CH_2}) was investigated in a supersonic molecular source. chem{La(C_2H_2)}, chem{La(C_3H_4)}, and chem{La(C_5H_8)} were observed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and their structures and electronic states were characterized by mass-analyzed threshold ionization spectroscopy. Both chem{La(C_2H_2)} and chem{La(C_3H_4)} are three-membered metallacycles formed by the C-C bond cleavage and hydrogen migration. chem{La(C_2H_2)} has a C$_{2v}$ structure, whereas chem{La(C_3H_4)} has a C$_{s}$ structure. chem{La(C_5H_8)} was identified as lanthano-methylcyclobutene (chem{La(CH_2C(CH_3)=CHCH_2)}) (C$_{1}$) formed by association and double-bond migration. All three complexes have a doublet ground state with the highest occupied molecular orbital being largely a La 6s character. Ionization removes the metal based electron, and the resultant ion has a similar structure to the neutral complex.
